The New Sussex Symphony, Sussex County's only community orchestra, was founded in 1959. Each year, the organization stages a formal concert series. The repertoire extends over four centuries, from the early 1700s to music that is so new it is being revised by the composer at the dress rehearsal. Whenever possible, we like to showcase New Jersey composers.
In addition, the symphony acts as a resource to the county's musical community. It encourages student musicians through a variety of collaborative efforts with local schools and youth orchestras. It stages outreach efforts that bring music to elderly populations unable to attend a formal concert.
The orchestra's personnel span a wide range of ability and age, from professional to amateur, student to senior. The group's Legacy Foundation encourages the growth of string instrument instruction by awarding an annual stipend to one string student.
The New Sussex Symphony's mission is to provide live, affordable classical music to the residents of northwest New Jersey, most of who live one to two hours from concert venues in Manhattan or Newark. The group offers an opportunity for audiences to hear live music, as well as for both amateur and professional musicians to make music themselves. The symphony also seeks to foster interest in classical music among young people.
