SOMERSET HILLS YMCA SWIM, INC. PROGRAM
SOMERSET COUNTY — SWIM, Inc., or Specialized Water Interest Movement provides muscularly impaired adults the opportunity to exercise who would otherwise find it difficult or impossible to exercise on land.
Dr. Paul Kiell, a longtime Somerset Hills YMCA member, nationally ranked Masters Swimmer and volunteer coordinator of the program said, “Water exercise, or aqua therapy, is an excellent approach for a multitude of afflictions. It is low impact and works the entire musculature, affording an aerobic workout that translates to fitness of mind and body.”
Kiell added that the exercise is virtually curative in cases of fibromyalgia, and helpful in Parkinson’s disease and other forms of neuromuscular disorder, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and obesity.
The program meets on Mondays from noon to 2 p.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA and incorporates one hour of swim therapy and one hour of social interaction and support.
SWIMSMART SERVICES
SWIMSMART can help you if you are an exercise swimmer, triathlete (or a runner or a cyclist who wants to be a triathlete) or competitive swimmer (age group, high school, college or masters) and if you want to improve your swimming technique. The methodology we have developed includes analysis of your swimming technique, identification of stroke defects and instruction on how to execute appropriate skill drills that will fix any stroke technique weaknesses that we identify.
For exercise swimmers, your joy of swimming will increase as you learn better swimming technique and you will get a full body workout as you learn to engage your core body muscles. For triathletes, you will be able to complete the swim leg faster and with less effort which will improve your overall event performance. For competitive swimmers of all ages (age group, high school, college, Masters), improving your stroke technique will allow you to reach your full potential with personal best times. I have been a stroke technique coach and competitive Masters swimmer for 32 years and am certified by the American Swim Coaches Association and the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. I am a graduate of the USA Swimming Sports Science Experience (SSE) program at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. SSE concentrated on stroke mechanics, physiology and psychology as it relates to competitive swimming.
